The Passionist
The Passionist
Congregation of the Passion of Jesus Christ was founded in
1720 by St. Paul of the Cross (1694 – 1775) in Italy and presently we are in 63
countries around the world with almost 2,000 Passionists and 400 communities. We,
Passionists, proclaim God’s love for the world revealed through the Passion of
Jesus Christ. The Passionists, a family of priests, brothers, and laity, reach
out with compassion to the crucified of today. We keep alive the memory of
Christ’s Passion through our commitment to community, prayer, ministries of the
Word, and service to those who suffer. The present superior general is Father
Joachim Rego C.P from Myanmar. Passionists profess vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. But the unique vow of any Passionist is his first vow. We vow to
meditate on the Passion of Jesus and to proclaim the meaning of his Passion to
all. Our motto is "May the Passion of Jesus Christ be always in our
hearts".
The Passionists came to Vietnam almost 16 years ago. Now we
have 1 foreign priest, 7 Vietnamese priests, 6 deacons, 9 brothers, 5 novices, 3
pre-novitiate, 9 philosophy students, and more than 10 aspirants. The
Passionists in Vietnam belongs to Holy Spirit Province comprising 4 countries:
Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and Vietnam. Nowadays, the Passionists
seek to remind people of the love of God which we see in the Passion of Jesus, and to respond with love to those who suffer. We do the mission in a variety
of fields: parish mission, retreat centers, spiritual direction, serving the
poor, teaching in school, working for justice.
